According to the law No. 1738 and the circular of the Prime Ministry number B.02.12-383-5774 and dated 01 May 1995, the National Oceanographic Data Center mission is carried out by the Department of Navigation, Hydrography and Oceanography.

The center receives data collected by all the Turkish Sea Research Institutions and applies quality control to these data sets, stores them and releases data on request depending on the confidentiality and accessibility of the data to international and national users.

Oceanography Data Center inventory is presented below,

• Physical, chemical, biological parameters which belong to sea water,
• Current, Wave and Tide data,
• Side Looking Sonar Records,
• Bottom sediment and core gravity data,
• Seismic Records,
• Meteorological data.

The data center receives data from three different sources. These are:

• Research and Battle Ships of the Turkish Naval Forces,
• Public and private Turkish Research Institutions,
• Foreign Sources.

Data sets are gathered on the whole of the Mediterranean, Aegean, Marmara and Black Sea, go through quality control, questioned for those who need them, statistical interpretation will be carried out and the interpretation will be evaluated and put into a visual context at the data center.

These data sets are divided into five different confidentiality and accessibility groups:

1. Internationally accessible data
2. Nationally accessible data
3. Data accessible to Turkish Public Sector Institutions
4. Data which is accessible only by permission from the data source
5. Confidential data
